Project Description
The construction of the transmaghreb high-speed rail network is a regional project aiming at connecting the main cities of the Maghreb countries, namely: Casablanca, Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli. The Tunisian section of the high-speed line will have a total length of 840 km. The expected travel times are the following: ? Casablanca - Algiers (1200 km): 6 hours ? Tunis - Algiers (1000 km): 5 hours ? Tunis - Tripoli (800 km): 4 hours The project is broken down into three phases: ? Phase 1 (Ras Jedir-Gabès, 180 km): A new line between Ras Jedir on the Tunisian-Libyan borders and Gabès with an electrified double track allowing a top speed of 250 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains. This first phase will use, to the extent possible, the same track as for the upcoming Gabès-Médenine railway project ? Phase 2 (Gabès-Tunis-Bizerte, 480 km): Construction of a new high-speed line that connects Bizerte to Gabès thru Tunis, Nabeul, Sousse and Sfax. This will be done either thru the upgrade of the existing metric-gauge rail line or thru a new separate standard gauge rail-line ? Phase 3 (Tunis-Tabarka, 180 km): Restructuring of the existing standard-gauge rail line between Tunis and the Algerian borders or construction of new section if required Estimated CAPEX ? Ras Jedir – Gabès (180 km): TND 2 600 million ? Gabès - Tunis - Bizerte (480 km): TND 14 000 million ? Tunis - Tabarka (180 km): TND 9 400 million ? The total (840 km): TND 26 000 million
