The Red de Expresos Regionales is a new underground rail network in order to connect the 3 principal commuter stations and interconnecting 6 metropolitan train lines of Buenos Aires. This important project will allow better connectivity between different areas of the city, and avoid the need for transfers which would otherwise result in increased congestion.
The project is split into 3 stages, with Stage 1 including 9.1 km of rail, 4.8 km of tunnels and 1 central underground station. Stage 1 is further split into 3 contracts. Contract 3 involves the Interchange Retiro and rail rolling stock, new electrification for the Mitre line and the tunnel connecting San Martín with Nueva Cabecera.
