The Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce (MIIC) is conducting a site suitability analysis for the construction of a port in the region of Cow Bay, St. Thomas. As such, MIIC has contracted the Mona Informatix Limited (MIL) to prepare a profile of the Cow Bay area. The construction of the port is expected to impact on the physical, biological and social environments. As such, this profile will provide background support to MIIC in determining if Cow Bay is a suitable location for siting the port.
Approximately 14.16 sq.km of the proposed port construction area was delineated as the study’s area of interest (Cow Bay AOI) which encompasses both coastal and land environments. The Cow Bay AOI has a perimeter of 15.14 km and is located along a 4-km stretch of shoreline trending northwest to southeast (see Figure 1). The site is located to the southwest of the Parish of St Thomas. The coastal shelf is narrow, extending no more than 1 km at its widest before reaching depths of over 200 m.
