The Light Rail Transit (LRT) system is planned to be built as an elevated structure with a length of around 21 km connecting Lau Chi market in the southwest of Medan City with city center in the northeastern part of the city. The LRT system will have 16 stations along the line.

Population has increased significantly in Medan and congestion has become a major issue that could reduce productivity of the region. There is only about 1 percent of public transportation vehicle in Medan out of all vehicles. The rest are private vehicles.
The Medan City government has planned to build mass urban transportation system in the form of LRT that will be integrated with Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system. The plan is included in the Medan Government's Regional Development Plan 2006-2025 and in its Medium Term Development Plan 2016-2021.
Indicative timetable of project development
Procurement is planned in 2018-2019 with bid awarded in Q2/2019. Financial close is expected in Q4/2019 followed by construction in early 2020.
