As a country with significant dependence on agriculture and tourism, Georgia is vulnerable not only to the health and environmental hazards of pollution but also to its economic impacts. Recognising the importance of good waste management in reducing pollution, the Government of Georgia has in recent years made significant progress in improving the collection and disposal of municipal solid waste through the implementation of a national solid waste management strategy. However, for hazardous waste no equivalent national initiative has been implemented yet, and even though local solutions exist in some places there is an urgent need at the national level to map, categorise and analyse the existence of hazardous waste and to provide the infrastructure to collect, treat and safely dispose of it. Therefore, Georgia has approached the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development with a request to assess the possibility of financing a hazardous waste management project. At this stage, it is envisioned that this will take the form of one hazardous waste landfill, together with appropriate hazardous waste storage, transfer and treatment facilities, to be developed and operated by an existing or new state-owned and / or controlled entity in conjunction with the private sector.
