Project Description
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering providing financing to the Government of Egypt for various municipal solid waste management investments in the three governorates that make up the Kitchener drain watershed, namely, Kafr El Sheikh, Gharbeya and Dekheila, as well as providing financing for the rehabilitation of the Kitchener drain. The Project forms part of an integrated depollution programme in the Nile Delta with an objective of depolluting the Kitchener drain, improving health and environmental conditions in the three governorates and supporting the depollution of the Mediterranean. The drain is highly polluted due to local wastewater and municipal solid waste disposal practices as well as agricultural run-off. Notwithstanding the long term benefits of the Project, rehabilitation works and construction activities, as well as the solid waste management activities, have the potential to result in significant environmental and social impacts and risks which would need to be mitigated to the extent possible and carefully managed. To understand what these impacts are and how best they can be managed, and to consider certain technical elements of the Project, the EBRD would like to engage a consultant (the “Consultant”) to carry out an Environmental and Social (“E&S”) Assessment and Technical Review of the Project.
