Project Description
The “Ferrocarril Central” Project (Central Railway) promoted by the government is a relevant infrastructure project for the multimodal transport system and the most important one for the railway sector in the recent years. The construction and maintenance of 273 km in rail lines between Montevideo port and the Paso de los Toros city represents a great opportunity to add the railway to the transport system. The project will involve upgrading the rail lines to a higher standard and will allow the circulation of freight trains at 80 kilometres per hour and 22.5 tons by axis. In addition to the projects already in progress such as the rehabilitation of Rivera line and the coastal line between Piedra Sola and Salto, Ferrocarrill Central consolidates the expansion of the rail transport offer for national and regional freight and complements the transport modes used up until now. On the central line Montevideo Port – Rivera and the nearby areas there are several agricultural, mining, industrial and forestry companies which already use the railway. Ferrocarrill Central will substantially improve the rail transport and lower cost, it will increase the railway transport demand and will capture new freight opportunities. The rehabilitation process of the railway system began with the reconstruction of some rail line stretches and that has been key to improve economic activity. This project offers the opportunity to consolidate the transport system as a complementary, competitive and sustainable transportation mode. The project includes an initial 26 km double-track stretch, a dozen of secondary tracks to train crossings, a track stretch to industrial areas and more than 40 railway bridges to be rehabilitated or reconstructed. The defined route includes the by-pass of several population centres and the rectification of curves which allows greater safety in the train operation. In the urban areas uneven passages will be built (railway buried in trench) and in the level crossings barrier systems will be placed with light signalization and sound effects. This automated system will guarantee high safety conditions. In summary, the “Ferrocarril Central” Project constitutes an important milestone within the country’s transport infrastructure program to enhance the logistic network. It will influence the national economic development and will increase competitiveness and sustainability.
