The CEPISA was established in 1962, when it was called Centrais Elétricas do Piauí S.A. The concessionaire is now responsible for serving 224 municipalities in a physical area covering the entire state of Piauí. The company has 1.17 million consumers.
In October of 2015, the terms of the distribution agreement ended and the concession was not extended. The government then decided to resume CEPISA's privatization process along with other assets from the Eletrobrás Group.

This resumption will let Brazil allocate resources in activities that can be delegated to the private sector, with gains in efficiency, management and improvement in the quality of services provided to consumers. A higher quality supply of electric power will, in turn, have a direct impact on economic activity in the region, broadening investments and contributing to a boost in productivity, with implications for employment and incomes for the population served by the project.
