Project stage info
Stage 1: Initial Government Announcement
Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation
Form of project announcement
Reasons: The project is the outcome of the vision articulated by the Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi to rejuvenate India's legacy railway stations. India's railway network boasts of over 8000 railway stations with a passenger capacity of 8 billion passenger trips annually. India's railway stations have not undergone any general major rejuvenation since independence 70 years ago, even as the population has expanded significantly. This has put immense pressure on the Indian railway station infrastructure. It is said that about 400 stations (2%) bear 75% of the passenger flux. Therefore there is an urgent need to redevelop India's railway stations to provide the citizens a superior and world class travelling experience. As city centers, these stations would also set an example of urban redevelopment effort that may be replicated throughout the city.
Expected Benefits: This infrastructure development effort would also address the necessity of fruitful public private people partnerships, develop entrepreneurial capacity in the cutting edge infrastructure space of urban development and give India market leadership in the space. It would also generate much needed highly skill employment in the critical sectors of urban development. The redeveloped stations would not only build world class railway stations, complete with the latest and cutting edge discourse in urban development such as transit oriented development, multi modal integration, sustainable energy integration; it shall also lead to development of ancillary technology sectors such as transportation, security, information technology.
